Shared Decision-Making Tools
An emerging best practice in behavioral and physical health, shared decision making (SDM) helps people have informed, meaningful, and collaborative discussions with providers about their treatment and recovery services. SDM involves decision support tools and resources that provide objective information and opportunities to weigh that information against personal preferences and values. These tools help empower people with information, encourage active participation in decision-making about treatment, and support dialogue between service providers and those they serve.
SAMHSA has developed an interactive, multimedia decision support tool for service users on “The role of antipsychotic medication in my recovery plan.” This tool compares the currently marketed antipsychotic medications on key side effects. It also offers information about treatment and service options – including complementary approaches. And, it provides people with an opportunity to consider and create a personalized report about their preferences on the role of antipsychotic medications in their recovery plan.
SAMHSA is creating additional decision support resources that will be available in the future. Under development is “Decisions in Recovery: Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction.” This interactive, multimedia tool compares three medications used for the treatment of opioid addiction. It helps people consider whether using medication assisted treatment is the right approach for them and if so, which approach would best fit their situation. It also provides information on recovery supports. Also under development is a tool for families considering psychoactive medication as part of a treatment program for youth diagnosed with behavioral and/or emotional problems.
